II. THIS CHAPTER WILL SUMMARIZE AND FORESHADOW USING ONE OF THE NOVEL'S MOST IMPORTANT MOTIFS: THE 'MAGIC' MIRROR and the rowboat. (p.141). What does magic mean? Think about Tolkien's use of the word in his F.T. Essay:

4--CARDS ARE SENT TO SOPHIE TOO--DAD WANTS A FRIENDSHIP TO DEVELOP
5--THE CARD ON PAGE 143 IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT PHILOSOPHICALLY. WHY?
a. Will Hilde understand?
b. What does Hilde's dad mean by needing restraint to prevent him from "blowing the whole thing?" This is one of the most important lines in the novel. For another perspective, read Conrad's Heart of Darkness.

II. THE BRASS MIRROR AND THE POSTCARDS MEAN MORE THAN A LITERAL READ SUGGESTS. WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE CONFUSED. WHY?
III. TOOK THE MIRROR NO. WHAT DOES THE MIRROR REPRESENT PHILOSOPHICALLY? CHECK A BOOK BY ABRAMS CALLED THE MIRROR AND THE LAMP.
