CHAPTER XIII--THE POSTCARDS

I. NATIONAL DAY--SOPHIE ENJOYED TAKING TIME OFF FROM PHILOSOPHY. WHY? SHOULD SHE?

II. THIS CHAPTER WILL SUMMARIZE AND FORESHADOW USING ONE OF THE NOVEL'S MOST IMPORTANT MOTIFS: THE 'MAGIC' MIRROR and the rowboat. (p.141). What does magic mean? Think about Tolkien's use of the word in his F.T. Essay:

A. THE VISIT TO THE CABIN AND THE LIGHT WILL DRAMATIZE (KEY WORD)--THE IDEAS OF SOMEONE WE JUST CONSIDERED. WHAT IS THE PHILOSOPHICAL CONCEPT AND FROM WHOM IS IT DERIVED?

B. THE POSTCARDS FROM LEBANON--why are they in the cabin and how did they get there?

C. ADDRESSED TO HILDE C/O KNOX --UN postmark.

D. CONTENT OF THE POSTCARDS TO HILDE: (PP. 140 ff)

II. THE BRASS MIRROR AND THE POSTCARDS MEAN MORE THAN A LITERAL READ SUGGESTS. WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE CONFUSED. WHY?

III. TOOK THE MIRROR NO. WHAT DOES THE MIRROR REPRESENT PHILOSOPHICALLY? CHECK A BOOK BY ABRAMS CALLED THE MIRROR AND THE LAMP.

REMEMBER

THERE IS A BASIC CONCEPT IN PLATONIC PHILOSOPHY AND
ITS INFLUENCE ON CHRISTIANITY
OPERATIVE HERE. REMEMBER WHAT HILDE'S DAD SAID THAT CAUSES HIM THE MOST CONCERN.

IV. DO NOT FORGET POINT OF VIEW. FROM WHOSE POINT OF VIEW IS THE NOVEL BEING NARRATED? THE QUESTION CANNOT BE ANSWERED WITHOUT CONSIDERING IRONY. CLICK HERE TO REVIEW.
