ON DAN BROWN'S
THE DA VINCI CODE:
INTRODUCTION AND TABLE OF CONTENTS
by Raymond Nighan, Ph.D.
Welcome to my web pages on The Da Vinci Code. Why add one more page to the thousands already on the web? In reviewing the on line and print criticism, I was struck with the fact that most commentaries focused on the novel's alleged errors, so I wanted to explore the book to see if it offered any perspective worthy of discussion at all. It does, and therefore these pages do not follow the traditional critiques. (Site posted June 21, 2006)
I wish to sustain two hypotheses: First, that the novel is not the anti-Christian polemic critics have alleged, and secondly, Teabing's character as a historical charlatan has been significantly misunderstood since Brown intended a dramatization of Teabing's consciousness that reveals much more than a researcher who cannot get his facts straight.

To sustain these objectives, I have examined the novel looking for literary and philosophical allusions that might sustain extended discussion and debate. In researching each chapter, I have referenced...

Shakespeare
Milton
John Donne
Chaucer
Martin Luther
Joseph Campbell
Eric Hoffer
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Martin Luther King
Galileo
Mary Shelley
John Keats
Carl Jung
Joseph Conrad
Robert Herrick

....among others including Richard Tarnas. So as you look, consider The Da Vinci Code from the perspective of an 'ideal novel' worth discussing...
